Is there a way to have the first layer lay down a thicker layer? I am having trouble getting the skirt to stick when using .1mm extrusion width.

Slic3r has a setting for that, but maybe I just don't know where or how to set that on Kisslicer.

Try bed roughness.
It will raise the print head a little higher and extrude more filament to fill in the first layer.
