Cannot open stl files

Post by robertfuchs »

I just began using KISSlicer, version 1.4.5.10, and everything went fine. Now, suddenly the software doesn't open any stl file. The small icon below the Open button shows the model image, but nothing appears on the main screen. I use an iMac 27"mid 2011, 12Gb RAM and a 240Gb SSD, besides the whole array of HD's, both internal and external. I have seen in this forum that many Mac users have issues with KISSlicer. I even erased the software, using AppZaper, and installed the previous version (this one that says "Stable". However, the problem persists. Anyone has an idea what may be going on? Thanks for any help.

I am almost positive it is an OpenGL problem. The little icon on the model tab is generated in software, but I use OpenGL for the main rendering. My Mac Mini that I use for compiling Mac builds is so ancient it doesn't have this issue. I have some ideas on possible fixes, but without any hardware to test it on it's all a shot in the dark.

The most common system with problems seems to be running Yosemite with an AMD video card...is this the case in your system?

I will be polling all my friends and co-workers to see if someone has a modern machine I can use to debug this problem.

thanks,
Jonathan

Thanks for your answer, Jonathan. What amazes me is that KISSlicer was working perfectly and then it suddenly stopped to show the desired stl file on the main screen. I read many posts on the forum, and mainly they refer to a memory problem. Well, running both the Extended Apple Hardware Test and its basic version, and also the Rember.app , I got a failure message in adresses at the Bit Flip test. Following some suggestions, I cleaned the memory cards, re-inserted them in their slots, to no avail. And what amazes still more is that some other apps work perfectly well, like the Slic3r, the Repetier itself, as well as AutoCAD, SketchUp, netfabb (basic version), meshlab and so on. No problem whatsoever with those softwares. So, I am almost sure that or the problem is caused by that memory failure - error 4MEM/9/40000000:0x877cc118 and some others similar to that one, or there is an incompatibility between KISSlicer version 1.4.5.10 and the iMac mid 2011 I use. I also installed the KISSlicer on my MacBook Air 13" begin of 2014, and until now I had no problems. Any ideas?

I wrote the above words this morning. Now it is 5:00 PM, and I found a quite interesting thing. If you select the option Preferences > File Handling > Preview On Open STL, everything works perfectly, at least until now. All files open normally, albeit a few present the above message. With other slicers I have not this problem. If Even so I try to slice, the computer screen goes crazy, and maybe this affected some memory location. I shall be happy to receive any comments on that.

I really do believe it is still an OpenGL issue, though of course the video card may share system RAM. From the menu, you can check the following:

[Preferences]->[Display Options]->[{X} Disable 3D View on Slice]

If that is checked, the application will not try to display while slicing. (Makes it a *tiny* bit faster too). This may be a possible workaround until I can find the actual problem and fix it.

Thanks, Jonathan. However, as I wrote on my last post, everything is working after I clicked on the Preferences > File Handling > Preview On Open STL option. I noticed that a check mark never shows up, so you don't know if it is on or off. Maybe this is a bug on the Mac version.

Ah, I had misunderstood. That's great news, thanks! I wonder if that works for the others who had experienced a similar issue? Perhaps I should make that the default setting on the Mac build.

thanks again,
