How to slice when inside and outside are same?

Postby 3dwim » 14 Nov 2016, 14:12

Hi,

I'm trying to slice a "Klein Bagel" .STL file. But as the inside and the outside are continuously connected, the slicer is confused. How can I do that?

See: https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model. ... f488f2666a for an example in SketchUp or Collada.

When generating a .STL file some of the face are flagged inside/outside wrong and the slicer show the model in red for a large part, but in this case I would like to ignore all of these and generate the .gcode.

A similar project is the doughnut: https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model. ... f488f2666a

Has anyone tried something like this before?

Regards,
Wim.

Hi 3dwim

I got curious and checked one of the models you mentioned from the link you provided.
I managed to download the model's sketchup file (.skp).
When I checked it, I have observed multiple problems.
It is not designed for 3D printing.

Problem 1 - You have mentioned well the first problem which is difficulty in differentiating between internal and external surfaces [ non uniform direction of surface Normals. ]
Problem 2 - The whole model has a height of 2mm. It is very small to print the details.
Third problem is - the Mesh [.stl] generated out of the model is bad, I have tried to repair it but it's not repairable.

Therefore, I have remodeled it.
The remodeled version can be downloaded from : http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1895107/#files
I have increased the height from 2 mm to 30 mm for good printout, you can scale it down though.
I have sliced it and attached a screen capture.
I am not going to print it, since I am material sensitive.

You can download the remodeled .stl file from thingivers link
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1895107/#files

As far as the other model is concerned, I think you need to remodel it.

Have a blessed day.

Hi Haileleul W.,

Thanks a lot, I've just downloaded the file and will try to print it at home tonight. It looks good on the screen.

Also thanks for elaborating on the problems. Indeed the model was not designed for 3D printing in the first place. I did not design it myself, I just found it after a discussion with a cousin on Moebius rings and Klein bottles. As I'm interesting into looking into this further, maybe use it in a project, I'm curious how you remodeled it. Not via the standard SketchUp tools I guess. Can you elaborate on that?

Regards and many thanks from a rainy Netherlands,
Wim.

OK, sorry about the delay, we suffered from an outage.....

I sliced with the KISSlicer, mostly default settings for 200 micron resolution, printed it on my Felix, attached a photo on your entry at Thingiverse. (http://www.thingiverse.com/make:268709).

Thanks again for the remodeling, but I'm still curious how to do that properly.

Regards,
Wim.

Hi 3dwim

Just for your curiosity the model is a simple one.
The software is not that important. You can use any 3D CAD software that you are familiar with.
The important thing is the method which is commonly found on almost all 3D modeling software.

I have attached a pdf file which shows the steps I used to remodel the above shape.
