Good .stl files import with serious errors

Post by Fablicator »

I reloaded some files in 1.6.3 successfully sliced with 1.5.1 and noticed some parts were showing major mesh errors.

This part, a letter "F" was the simplest example I could find. When imported it asks about voids (which it has none) and then shows an inverted bottom surface.

If I transform the part (flip upside-down) the errors disappear.

File is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/21a2rkbuv4ebg4p/F.STL?dl=0

That is interesting; neither Netfabb nor makeprintable.com show any errors in the file, but the "repaired" version opens without error.

I will add this to the list.

Thanks.

30 open edges, 25 overlapping vertices, not an error free model. Doesn't show errors in KS1.5

checked with 3dsMax

Interesting.

It is a solidworks export fwiw, which usually are very reliable.

Huh. Just checked with Slic3r PE - says there are 30 "edges fixed".

I use Rhino (CAD) for my design work for one very simple reason-it has excellent tools for creating and editing meshes. Here is what Rhino's mesh evaluation shows:

This is NOT a well formed STL, it absolutely has naked edges. The fact that Netfabb and makeprintable.com don't show this is troublesome.

Interestingly, KISS shows exactly the same edge issues in its display - that's a good thing.

cheers,

OK, so there are errors...

Why do those errors disappear when the mesh is transformed?

If an older version was tolerant to these errors, shouldn't the current version be at least as tolerant?

You'd have to ask the developer those questions.
