Supports only on build plate

Supports only on build plate

Postby woody3dp » 12 Sep 2017, 07:38

Hi, I tried to find a way to have supports on the build plate only, is it possible ?
Is there also a way to not support bridges ?
Thanks

If something needs support, then it should be supported.

But you can use Support Z-Roof to limit supports to anything lower than that value.

And I find it best to use a sheath for at least the first 5mm - makes supports much more stable and less prone to detach during printing.

Thank you for your answer Peter, I've already tried to use Support Z roof, but I need supports at this height somewhere else in the print.
Here's my problem:
Red arrows show where KS put the supports:

In the layer just following the one above, we can see that the support inside the print is unecessary, it is self supported (a bridge), and it will be almost impossible to remove:

Is there a way to remove only the support I don't want ? One option would be to use supports that are only on the build plate, but I can't see this option.
Thanks for your help

That model prints without supports...

I modified/improved that model to add a third outlet and raise the left hand side (which was a little low). Also removed a lot of the internal baffles which were reducing airflow.

In the attached, there are 2 models, one for the original probe housing and one for the new version; just set whichever mesh you don't need to "void" in extruder map. And print without supports.

Waow thank you Peter. I will try your model. I've already tried to print the model above without supports but it was messy. I've printed it in ABS.

You should try with PLA. With ABS, you may need to reduce the Cool volume to Min and use the fam when cooling.

There really is no problem printing these parts from PLA; mine has been running for 2 months and there's no sign of any melt.

Peter

EDIT: also have a look at the images you uploaded. The supports where you don't want them to be - there is no air path to that part of the model.

-I agree with you, supports aren't needed with PLA, PLA is very "permissive" (is this the right term ?) in terms of overhangs. I've printed your model in PLA, it printed perfectly (with kisslicer :D ). I just removed the little internal baffles, but perhaps you let them here for a specific reason ?

-I will try to print it with ABS (I wonder if PLA will support the heating generated by a nozzle at 255°c, have you already tried to print with ABS and your PLA Fan nozzle ?)

-"With ABS, you may need to reduce the Cool volume to Min and use the fam when cooling." --> do you mean this (circled in red) ? What would be a good value to start with concerning ABS ?

Do the values circled in yellow suit ABS also ?

- And finally, you're absolutely right, I didn't noticed there weren't air path to this part of the model :? but, if I would like to remove this support nevertheless, for another model, would it be possible ? (for example, an option that enables supports on the build plate only...)

Thank you Peter, it's a lot of questions, and I know it takes a lot of time to answer, so thank you again for your time :D

P.S: I'm still working on hiding seams... :x

Yes. I couldn't be bothered removing them. It was just a quick remodel...

No, I don't print with ABS, But I have printed at other filaments at 250 degrees without issue.

As I don't print with ABS, I don't really know. I believe Jonathan uses mainly ABS, he may be along shortly, but I do think you should start with the settings in your image to see how it goes.

I haven't found a way to do this (at the moment). Maybe this will be a new feature in V2?

Me too... Seems like perfection takes a while to achieve...
